Økologi, Fibre, Dyrevelfærd og Tryk af mønstre
VORES HOLDNING
Vi er selv begyndt at leve mere økologisk og dette har påvirket vores opfattelse af, hvad der er rigtigt for os, vores efterkommere, dyrevelfærden og de mennesker, som arbejder med produktionen af garn og garnfibre.
Derfor er det nu helt naturligt for os, at tænke i økologi og bæredygtighed, når vi kigger på produktionen af garn.
BOMULDSDYRKNINGEN
Vi går meget op i, at bomulden i garnerne er økologisk.
Normal bomuldsdyrkning dækker 5% af verdens landbrugsareal og er den jordbrugsafgrøde, hvortil der bruges flest kemikalier, nemlig 11% af verdens forbrug af jordbrugskemikalier.
Mange af kemikalierne er livsfarlige for arbejderne, forurener miljøet og forbliver i de færdigbearbejdede tekstiler – derfor tænker og arbejder vi specielt i den økologiske retning omkring bomuld, men vi tænker også økologi i andre fibre.
CERTICERET ØKOLOGISK BOMULD
Bomulden (selve råvaren) i vores garner er økologisk certificeret (lige bortset fra den bomuld der er anvendt til kvaliteten Hemp+Cotton+Modal - her kunne det desværre ikke lade sig gøre af tekniske årsager).
Den økologiske bomuld i vores produkter kommer fra to lande, Tyrkiet og Indien.
CERTIFICERET ØKOLOGISK ULD
Ulden (selve råvaren) i vores garner med nældefiber dvs. No.3 ORGANIC WOOL+NETTLES + No. 4 + NO. 6 er økologisk certificeret.
MULESING
Mulesing er en behandlings-metode, hvor fårene i forbindelse med angreb af paracitter omkring haleroden har været udsat for meget hårdhændet beskæring (dette foregår specielt i Australien og New Zealand).
ULD og MERINO ULD
Fra 2016 har ONION taget beslutning om, at vi kun vil have garanteret mulesingfri Uld og Merino Uld i vores produkter.
Denne garanti har vi fået, ved at vores Uld er økologisk eller at Ulden/Merino ulden kommer fra Sydamerika.
MOHAIR
Mohair fibrene kommer fra geder og købes via børsen i Cape Town, Sydafrika.
NÆLDEFIBRE
Nældefibrene i vores garner er pesticidfri.
Nældefibrene kommer fra Kina. Vi har fået bekræftet fra vores leverandør, at der ikke anvendes sprøjtemidler på nældefiber-afgrøderne.
CERTIFIKATER
Vores producent modtager certifikater for hver levering af økologisk bomuld, uld m.v.
SPINDERI
Vores garner er produceret i Europa på italiensk kvalitetsspinderi, som er underlagt EU-reglerne for produktion og arbejdsvilkår.
Det gør, at vi kan stole på, at arbejdsforholdene er i orden.
Vores leverandør fortæller, at de altid køber de bedste fibre, hvilket også gør, at priserne til os og videre til forhandlere og forbrugerne dermed påvirkes - men - dette skal ses som en garanti for, at der ikke gåes på kompromis med kvaliteten.
INDFARVNING
Indfarvning af vores garner er garanteret gift-fri, idet garnerne er indfarvet efter europæiske standarder.
SYMØNSTRE
Vores symønstre er trykt på Svanemærket papir - som en tryksag efter Nordisk Miljø Mærkning på et dansk kvalitets trykkeri.
GENBRUG
Til vores forsendelser genbruger vi så vidt muligt emballagen fra vores producenter, hvilket også gavner miljøet.

OUR ATTITUDE
The last years we ourselves have been living more and more ecological, and this is affecting our view of what is right for us, our descendants, the animal care and the people who work with the production of yarns and yarn-fibers. It is therefore now a natural thing for us to consider this when we look at the production of yarns.
COTTON CULTIVATION
We are especially concerned of the cotton, which we means just has to be ecological. Normal cotton crops covers 5% of the agricultural area on the earth. 11% of the consumption of pesticides are used to produce this crop.
Many of the pesticides used are lethal for the workers + it contains the environment and stays put in the finished textiles - this is the reason that we are working the ecological way especially concerning the cotton fibers but we also think ecological in other fibers.
CERTIFIED ECOLOGICAL COTTON
The cotton (the raw material) in our yarns is ecologically certified (except for the cotton in our quality Hemp+Cotton+Modal - here it is not possible from technical reasons).
The organic cotton fibers in our yarns comes from two places, Turkey and India.
CERTIFIED ECOLOGICAL WOOL
The wool (the raw material) in our yarns with nettle fibers No.3, No.4 and No.6 Organic Wool+Nettles is ecologically certified.
MULESING
Mulesing is an extreme and rough treatment of sheeps when they are attacked by paracites around its tale, where the skin around the tale is cut away and often by a unskilled person.
This treatment is mostly performed in Australia and New Zealand and is very criticised.
WOOL AND MERINO WOOL
From beginning of 2016 ONION decided, that we will only accept mulesing-free wool and merino wool in our products.
We have this guarantee, since the wool used in our yarns is ecological or the wool/merino wool comes from South America. We have received declarations that the wool and merino wool is free of mulling.
MOHAIR
The mohair wool comes from goats and is bought at the exchange market in Cape Town, South Africa.
NETTLE FIBERS
The nettle fibers in our yarns is free of pesticides.
The fibers comes from China. We have received a confirmation from our supplier, that no pesticides are used in the nettle-fiber-crops.
COLOURATION
The colouration of our yarns is guaranteed free of pesticides since the yarns are coloured according to EU standards.
CERTIFICATES
Our supplier receives a certificate at every delivery of ecological cotton, wool, merino wool and so on…
SPINNING FACTORY
Our yarns are produced in Europe in an italian quality spinning factory that is subject to the common EU restrictions of production and working conditions.
Our supplier ensures us, that they always buy the best fibers. This has of course also influence on the price from us to you and further to the consumer - but - this is to be considered as a guarantee that the quality has not been compromised.
SEWING PATTERNS
Our sewing patterns are printed in a danish printing house, at Swan labelled paper.
Swan labelled paper which is a Nordic ecolabelling guarantee mark.
RECYCLING
We recycle the packing material from the deliveries as much as possibles in our packaging and the rest is sent to a recycling station.
ONION - Sock Yarns
Concerning our qualities with nettle fibers, meaning Nettle Sock Yarn, No.3, No.4 and No.6 Organic Wool+Nettles, the nettle fiber replaces the polyester or other artificial qualities that usually are used in sock yarns and gives the consumer a possibility to have 100% organic socks + the Nettle Fiber is free of pesticides.
The nettle fiber has the strength like for instant silk, and therefore it is useable for socks - try for instant to tear the No.6 Organic Wool+Nettles yarn apart, and you will feel which strength it has.
Looking at our patterns, you will find, that we have sock-patterns for more of the qualities.
The Nettle Sock Yarn is produced especially with the socks in mind and is therefore with a SuperWash treatment, so the socks can be machine-washed.
The other qualities are only for cold hand-wash - however they are indeed very suitable for socks and rack socks too.
